As an end-of-year trip our class was able to visit the Körperwelten Museum in Heidelberg, to supplement what the students had been learning about in their biology class. We first did a walking tour in English around the Altstadt, where the students learned a bit about the history of the city and were able to see some of the most famous sights – the Heidelberger Schloss, the old bridge, and some parts of the university. They were perhaps most surprised by the old Studentenkarzer, which is now the university’s bookshop!

The Körperwelten Museum offers the chance for students to learn in an interactive way about the human body. We were able to see the difference between the size of an athlete and a normal person’s heart, check our blood pressure, and individually measure our stress levels, experiences which were very educational and also made for some light-hearted jokes about whose stress level was the highest. In addition to this, the students were able to see countless life-size examples of the human muscular and skeletal systems and the inner organs, providing tangible examples of what they will be learning about in their biology class. It also offered the opportunity to describe some aspects of the museum in English and discuss some common idioms. For example, the paper mache pig on the ceiling prompted a discussion about the phrase “When pigs fly,” which the students had never heard before. Reflecting on the trip afterwards in English class, the students were on the one hand slightly unsettled by the figures from the museum, but also glad that they had had the opportunity to visit such a unique place.

“I learned a lot on the trip yesterday. One thing I learned is that a human breathes 20,000 times a day without noticing. I was really surprised when I saw the pregnant mannequin. I was also surprised by how many details the mannequins have. I liked that we had the opportunity to visit this place and learn about the human body. I like that people have the chance to learn about their body, organs, and their functions.”

Für die Klasse 1BK2W hat am 01.06.22 der Schultag nicht wie gewöhnlich in der Schule, sondern vor dem Haupteingang der Ausstellung KÖRPERWELTEN in Heidelberg begonnen. Wir waren alle aufgeregt. Bereits seit einigen Wochen haben wir uns im Biologieunterricht mit dem Thema „Der menschliche Körper“ beschäftigt. Wir haben Schweinelunge und Schweineherz präpariert und waren bestens auf die Ausstellung vorbereitet. Die Vorstellung, dass es sich dabei um echte anatomische Präparate handelt, hat uns ein wenig beängstigt – aber überwiegt hat die Neugier.

Nach einer Begrüßung und einer kurzen Einführung der Angestellten des Museums durften wir rein. In den Heidelberger KÖRPERWELTEN steht das Thema „Glück“ im Vordergrund. Wir konnten an echten anatomischen Präparaten entdecken, was genau unter unserer Haut steckt und welche Strukturen an der Entstehung des Glücksgefühls beteiligt sind. Dabei haben wir viel Interessantes über unsere Organfunktionen und viel über das Thema Gesundheit erfahren. Wir waren überrascht, wie vielseitig sich positive oder negative Emotionen auf den gesamten Körper auswirken. Es war für alle eine spannende Erfahrung.

Was ist uns besonders in der Erinnerung geblieben? Eine schwangere Frau, die bis auf die Muskulatur gehäutet ist, mit offenem Babybauch und freiem Blick auf den ungeborenen Säugling. Und hoch oben unter der Hallendecke hing ein Schwein mit weißen Engelsflügeln.

Nach einem Spaziergang durch die wunderschöne Heidelberger Altstadt und gemeinsamen Mittagessen war unser Ausflug leider zu Ende.
